A couple of days ago, my client and good friend was lying on my table getting micro-current lifted and toned and we were chatting. She told me of a new terrific man she had just met and how beautiful he thinks she is and tells her all the time. We moved onto her comedy improve shows and how well they are going and in general how she is feeling altogether in her element. As I moved on to the LED softening and conditioning therapy, she mentioned that she is now obsessed with her new eyelash extensions and wanted to know if I thought that was ok. I said, “anything that makes you look and feel more beautiful and gets you more attention is great!” And I meant it. I believe in pretty.
ALL KINDS ‘o’ pretty…
I grew up with a mother that came home on the subway and made a gourmet dinner every night in her coat. She had the same straight brunette bob with bangs my entire life, except for a perm for 5 mins in the 80’s and always had a cute as hell figure. She’s smart, funny, witty, extremely well read, deeply artistic and stylish as fu*k. Her business is graphic design, mostly in the fashion world, so I grew up knowing what couture meant. As well as who Jackson Pollack, Wllem de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg were. I was taught that all people were equal in importance and relevance, except if you were racist or dumb. Art, literature, dance, theater, wine, cuisine, music, design, fashion, and physical beauty all ruled.
My mother has never ever left the house without lipstick or brushing her hair. She would not think to wear sweats out on the street or own a pair of Uggs and looking good is as important to her as anything else of significance, except for her family’s health. What I’m getting to is, looking your best is extremely important and empowering. Especially for women. Vanity is not a freakin’ curse word. It doesn’t mean you are shallow or silly.
Getting attention for one’s beauty is the quickest ego boost there is and we all need it. Its then a kind of switch or stepping stone to having the energy and will to then do what you want in other areas of your life that need attention. Like finding the right mate, the perfect job, expressing that art form that plagues your soul, actually going to the gym or spin class or yoga 3 times a week and speaking up for yourself when needed, because you feel strong… and hot.. Not simple, but quite potent. So take that time and money and get your hair done and your skin healed and pampered and try those lash intentions and wax, uh-huh hair removal, thread those eyebrows and that chin now! And throw on a great shade of red lipstick and go take the world by the balls. Done.
You are my favorite red head (Bpnnie Raitt comes right up close)
Hey, thanks for the pep talk. Sometimes it’s hard to see the benefits of all this maintenance, because the improvements are subtle and gradual. If you keep doing something that is good for you, you will see the benefits eventually, but so often it’s not until years later. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s worth the time and expense.
You are taking care of yourself – just like you would your garden – so you can blossom and be your most gorgeous self.
